How Dogs Are Judged at a Conformation Dog Show

In every breed dogs (males) are judged first, then bitches (females). For each sex, there are seven classes and none of the dogs that compete are Champions.

Puppy (6- 9 months) For puppies at least six months, but less than nine months old.
Puppy (9-12 months) For puppies at least nine months, but less than one year old.
12 -18 months For dogs at least one year old, but less than eighteen months old.
Novice For dogs who have never won a first prize.
Bred-By-Exhibitor For dogs six months of age and over, which are presently owned and exhibited by the same person or kennel who is the recognized breeder in The American Kennel Club records.
American Bred  For dogs born in the USA.
Open For all dogs, American and foreign bred.

For Dalmatians, this may be split into two classes, Open Black Spotted and Open Liver Spotted. Usually done at specialties or larer entry shows. This is the only class that separates Blacks from Livers.

(Usually the most experienced dogs are seen in the Bred-By-Exhibitor and Open Classes).

Winners (WD or WB)

In this competition the first place winners of all the above classes are judged in two groups, dogs and bitches.

When the Winners class is called, the following come back into the ring.

First place winner of the Puppy (6- 9 months) class
First place winner of the Puppy (9-12 months) class
First place winner of the 12-18 months class
First place winner of the Novice class
First place winner of the Bred-By-Exhibitor class
First place winner of the American Bred class
First place winner of the Open class

Reserve Winners (RWD or RWB)

After the Winners Dog or Bitch has been chosen, the judge will award a Reserve Winners Dog or Bitch. In this case, the dog or bitch that was second place to the Winners Dog or Bitch is called back into the ring.

For example:

If the first place winner of the Puppy (6- 9 months) class was also Winners Dog or Bitch, the second place winner of the Puppy (6- 9 months) class goes back into the ring to compete for Reserve Winners Dog or Bitch. This is awarded in the event the Winners Dog or Bitch is ineligble for the points. In which case the Reserve Dog or Bitch will be awarded Winners Dog or Bitch and the points.

Best Of Breed (BOB)

The best representative of a Dalmatian overall. Dogs/Bithces that are eligible for Best Of Breed competition are Champions of record, dogs that have just completed their CH. title requirements (called move ups) and Winners Dog or Bitch (that on that day).

Best of Winners (BOW)

Only two dogs compete in this category - Winners Dog & Winners Bitch. One is chosen Best of Winners.

Best of Opposite Sex (BOS)

If Best of Breed is awarded to a dog, Best Of Opposite Sex will be given to a Bitch.

Championship Points

Championship points can be won by one dog and one bitch in each breed. The Winners Dog & Winners Bitch receive thses points. The number of points earned (1-5) depends on the total number of each sex competing in each breed. When a dog has received 15 points, which must include two major wins (a 3, 4 or 5 point win), he is declared a Champion and holds the title all his life.
